The spine is made up of 29 bony segments called vertebrae, in between each vertebrae are cartilage discs which cushion the spinal column from shock. Neck bones are numbered C1 to C7 and are called cervical vertebrae. The first bone is also known as the atlas, as it holds the skull. The second bone is also known as the axis as it allows the skull to rotate on its “axis”. These are the smallest and most mobile of the vertebrae. Upper back bones are numbered T1 to T12 and are called thoracic vertebrae. Your ribs are attached at each side to these vertebrae. Lower back bones are numbered L1 to L5 and are called lumbar vertebrae and bones at the base of your spine are numbered S1 to S5 and are called sacral vertebrae. These bones join your pelvis.

Compensation for your injury is dependent on the extent of the injury, the discomfort sustained and the recovery period together with any long term consequences. Spinal injury solicitors will negotiate compensation for your pain, suffering and inconvenience, and a sum for your loss of earnings. There may be compensation for any medical aids or appliances you need as a result of being less mobile than previously together with damages for out of pocket expenses and the legal costs of the claim.

Cartilage disks are easily torn or dislocated when the spinal column is subjected to significant stresses, such as those encountered in lifting a heavy load improperly, or twisting the back sharply, as occurs in many accidents at work injuries. Such a "slipped" disk is only one of many causes of back pain. Such back problems can cause extreme pain, which may be increased by changes in the weather or poor diet, making lifting, walking, and sitting an excruciating ordeal. Since so many muscles place stress on the spine when they operate, simple activities such as going to the bathroom, coughing, laughing, and even breathing may be intolerable with such a condition. It is often important to obtain early physical therapy such as chiropractor, osteopathy or physiotherapy. Providing the incident is not your fault, we can usually arrange such treatment privately and ensure that the other side’s insurance company will pay the cost.

Dependent on the type of injury you have suffered, muscular, ligament, spinal cord injury etc, you will usually have received treatment by a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, or consultant neurologist. We will liaise with them to establish the specific cause of your injury and the likely recovery period or if you are going to be permanently injured, what your final condition is likely to be. Once we understand your injury, we will seek to agree with the other side’s insurer a course of action. This may involve agreeing a private treatment plan, including medical operation, or just simply private physical therapy.

Once your injury has settled down spinal injury solicitors will instruct a medical expert to prepare a report for legal purposes detailing your injuries, whether or not you have any pre existing condition. How your injuries have affected you in your daily life, at work, at home and socially. You may have stopped playing recreational football, or been prevented from carrying or lifting at work or home. The report will explain what recovery you have made to date, and what if any permanent symptoms you will have.
